I don't know how much Joe Mesi has spent trying to convince the Nevada Athletic Commission to lift his medical suspension, but the copy bill alone for the curriculum vitaes of the expert witnesses he presented had to be more than the gross-national product of several third-world countries.

Mesi, an unbeaten heavyweight contender, is convinced he can safely return to boxing despite suffering two subdural hematomas as a result of his bout with Vassiliy Jirov at Mandalay Bay on March 13, 2004.

After listening to four hours of medical testimony Thursday, I've come to believe he's right. continue »

  » BUFFALO SUPPORTS MESI RETURN!
    By: Bob Caico
Source: Fight News
In an unprecedented move by the City of Buffalo Common Council, lawmakers passed a resolution today acknowledging their full support in Mesi’s quest to be re-instated from his suspension by the Neveda State Athletic Commission. Council members, Marc Coppola and Richard Fontana sponsored a resolution that reads in part: "Joe Mesi has brought tremendous recognition to Buffalo by virtue of his boxing exploits; and Joe Mesi has strong medical evidence that he suffers no residual damage from his injury; and this council supports a fair hearing before Nevada authorities as he seeks to have his suspension lifted."

Joe addressed the council after it’s unanimous approval. "This is a tremendous honor. Thank you for helping me let Las Vegas know we are determined to pursue my dream of bringing a world championship to the city of Buffalo." Coppola will send a certified copy of the proclamation to Marc Ratner and Keith Kizer of the NSAC. visit Fight News»

» MESI FIGHTING TO SAVE CAREER
    By: Tim Smith
Source:
New York Daily News
Buffalo heavyweight Joe Mesi has come out swinging to re-establish his career after the Nevada State Athletic Commission placed him on medical suspension following a match against Vassiliy Jirov in Las Vegas last March.

Mesi filed a notice of intent to sue Physicians Imaging Center of Western New York for releasing the results of five MRIs to the New York State Athletic Commission. And he notified the New York State Attorney General's Office of his intent to sue the NYSAC in the Court of Claims for leaking the results of those MRIs to the media.

Mesi is also awaiting a hearing before a five-member medical advisory panel of the Nevada commission on his suspension. That decision could determine whether Mesi, 31, ever sets foot inside a boxing ring again.

Mesi believes the actions of the hospital and whoever leaked the MRI results to the media poisoned the court of public opinion about whether he should box again. continue»

» MESI ADDRESSES RINGSIDE PHYSICIANS IN MIAMI
    By: Marian Giallombardo
Source:
Sports & Leisure Magazine
Direct from his return from Miami, Joe reports to Sports and Leisure that he and his team are working diligently to have his suspension lifted. At the same time, he is concerned for the issue of fighter's safety issues through out the world of boxing.

As reported on www.fightnews.com, The American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians (AAPRP) Medical Conference was held November 10-14, 2004 at the Miami Wyndham Resort in Miami Beach, Florida. Over 130 physicians, members and guests including reporters, managers and trainers, attended this year's program on boxing safety. The conference was also attended by Middleweight Champion, Bernard Hopkins, Light Heavyweight Champion, Glencoffee Johnson, and Heavyweight Contender, Joe Mesi and long time fight doctor, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco.

AAPRP chairman Dr. Michael Schwartz stated, "it's the goal of the AAPRP that the development of a referral panel to administer the medical assistance program across the country will enable boxers to seek and receive medical care". This is our quest, to protect and support the fighters.

During a segment of the seminar, Dr. Robert Cantu (MA) and Dr. Barry Jordan (NY) debated whether a boxer with a history of an intracranial bleed should ever be permitted to compete again in professional boxing. Dr. Robert Cantu presented an actual slide of Joe’s injury to the ringside physicians. Present at the debate was Heavyweight Contender Baby Joe Mesi and his father/manager Jack, who were invited to speak. Following this debate, the AAPRP agreed they should develop a medical panel to review such cases and render an opinion on a case by case basis.

Members of the AAPRP were recognized for their outstanding achievements at the Annual AAPRP Awards Banquet. The award committee nominated and selected Dr. Robert Cantu to receive the AAPRP 2004 “Distinguished Educator of the Year” award, which was presented by Jack Mesi.

Joe Mesi stated, "To be invited to attend this professional informative conference was a special treat for me. These highly professional physicians volunteer their services and skills out of love for the sport of professional/amateur boxing. I will continue to support the efforts of this organization throughout my entire career and beyond."

»» THE SKINNY ON "BABY JOE"
    By: Marian Giallombardo
Source:
Sports & Leisure Magazine

Heavyweight boxer “Baby Joe” Mesi called recently to appraise us and his loyal fans about his recent developments in his career and his life outside boxing. Below are a few concerns he addressed.
On his suspension from boxing
“Progress continues to be made with our lawyers in preparation for a hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. I am very anxious to resume my career and to re-instate my rankings as the world’s number one heavyweight contender. Our entire team feels confident that the Commission and our legal staff will come to an agreement which will allow me to do this. The process involved is a complicated one and therefore, slow moving. But it is progressing and we should have news to report in the next few weeks.”
On his physical condition
“I have never felt better. I am fully recovered from the minor injuries which occurred in my last fight. Despite what the local press would have you believe, I am within one training period (8-10 weeks) of being in the same perfect fighting shape I have been for each of my previous professional fights."

"Heavy conditioning is prohibited under the terms of my suspension. But I am continuing a light regimen of road work and training.”
On his relationship with promoter Tony Holden
“Again, there have been inferences in the press that my split with promoter Tony Holden was acrimonious. Nothing could be further from the truth. Tony and his family remain close friends and confidants with me and my family. His reasons for stepping down as my promoters were personal and hopefully, temporary. I look forward to resuming my relationship with Tony sometime in the not too distant future. Mr. Holden is at once, a man of integrity, a gentleman’s gentleman and a fierce supporter of my best interests.”
On his father’s recent illness
“On of the factors which have added to the delay in my suspension process has been my father’s recent bout with prostate cancer. All things pale in importance, when compared to an illness in your family."

"My brother Tom, my Dad and I want to thank all of the people who have wished us well and kept us in their prayers."

"My father is home from the hospital and recovering. The Lord continues to bless our family."

"I hope these facts have answered the false suppositions which have been made in the press about my career, my family and me. If you would like more information, please log onto my website: www.babyjoemesi.com.”

FORCED FIGHTERS, EVEN SELF-MADE STARS TO PROMOTERS!
When he was fired earlier this year from ESPN/ABC/Disney, Bob Yalen was given six months of severance pay. He also took with him a 401 K Pension plan with better than $400,000 in it. Nobody at the ESPN headquarters in Bristol, CT will come forth with the reason why Yalen was fired after almost 25 years. But in at least one case, Yalen forced "Baby Joe" Mesi to sign with the then so-called ESPN "House Promoter" "Sugar Ray" Leonard. Mesi's people were floored! Why should they sign with a Promoter when Joe is packing 10,000 into an arena each time he fights? Because if Joe Mesi didn't sign with Leonard, he could kiss any ESPN appearances goodbye, this was the manner in which Yalen stuck it to "Team Mesi." continue»
